Colorado is a top 10 state for population growth over the last year, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today.
The state ranks eighth among the 50 states and D.C. for total residents added between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017 — 77,049 — and ninth for rate of growth — about 1.4 percent.
That growth rate is almost twice the national population increase of 0.72 percent between 2016 and 2017, the Census report says.
Colorado’s population now stands at 5,607,154, up from 5,530,105 last year and 5,029,325 in 2010.
The report says that of Colorado’s 77,049 new residents added over the last year, 30,211 were a “natural increase” resulting from 67,638 births minus 37,427 deaths. The remaining 36,653 residents added since 2017 were immigrants — 36,653 from other states and 9,973 from other nations.
Among all the states, the biggest population gainers over the last year in raw numbers were Texas (up 399,734), Florida (up 327,811) and California (up 240,177).
Percentage-wise, Idaho posted the highest growth rate (2.2 percent), followed by Nevada (2 percent) and Utah (1.9 percent).
Meanwhile, neighboring Wyoming is one of eight states that saw a loss of population — about 1 percent — over the last year.
The national population is now 325.7 million, up 2.3 million from last year, the Census Bureau says. Just over 1.1 million of those new residents are immigrants; the rest are native born.
California remains the nation’s most populous state, with 39.5 million residents, followed by Texas (28.3 million) and Florida (21 million).
Regionally, the nation's West and South are growing much faster (1 percent each from last year) than the Northeast (0.2 percent) and Midwest (0.3 percent).

"Dave Hansen did a great job selling my house in Denver in a very difficult market. I had moved to Vancouver, WA, three years prior, so the whole transaction was handled over the phone and online. Overall, despite some bumps in the road, Dave got the job done - without having to resort to a short sale or foreclosure. Dave is a skilled negotiator, and he went above and beyond the call of what I would expect from a Realtor. If you area in the market to buy or sell a house in the Denver metro area, then I recommend that you hire Dave Hansen as your Realtor"
